Metal Testing Service

If you have a piece of jewellery, and aren't sure what metal it is, our testing service will help to provide an indication of the metal content and grade.

Things to consider

During the testing process, several surface scrapings will be taken from the piece of jewellery to test the quality of the alloy. You may need to (re)polish your item where the scraping has been taken from. We can provide a repolishing service at extra charge for either the area we've tested, or the whole piece.

What does it cost?

For metal testing, it's more cost effective to send more items than a single item. The price per item will reduce as per the bands below.

A metal test is not a guarantee, nor is it a hallmark

Please note that our testing service provides an indication of the metal content and does not constitute a hallmark, nor is it a guarantee that the item you are viewing in conjunction with our results slip is actually the item tested. Only a hallmark can provide such a guarantee - you may wish to check out our hallmarking service if you're looking for a solid guarantee.

How do I send my items to you?

You can bring your items to our premises or to one of our classes (by prior arrangement only on the classes) where we can receive them. We don't provide a while-you-wait service with testing, so we'll advise you of the expected date or time when the testing will be completed, and will take contact details so that we can let you know.

You can also send your items to us by post with an appropriate covering letter. Please ensure that you send your items via an appropriate courier or postal service that does insure jewellery or bullion, as many don't. Royal Mail's Special Delivery service is often the service of choice as jewellery is permitted.

How do I pay for the testing?

If you're visiting our premises or a class to drop off your items, you can either pay when you drop the items off, or on collection.

If you've posted your items to us, you can enclose a cheque (made payable to 'Jonathan Price' - the business is run by a sole trader with our full name being 'Jon Price T/A Teesside Silversmith) for the full amount due including £6.00 to cover return post. Alternatively, we can contact you to collect payment - we accept most debit / credit cards and can take payment over the telephone, so please remember to include your telephone number when you send your items!

Please note that cheque payments will need to clear before we can send your items back to you, so can add an additional delay to the overall processing time.

How will my jewellery be returned?

All items sent to us for testing will be returned by Royal Mail's Special Delivery service. The typical cost of this is £6.00 and will be added to your order. If you require additional insurance for high value items, please email us or use our contact details for a quotation.
